Description
American Buffalo Gold Coin
The 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin is the first 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold bullion coin ever issued by the United States Mint. First released on December 22, 2005, it was created to meet investor demand for a pure gold U.S. coin, unlike the 22-karat American Gold Eagles.
- Metal: 99.99% pure gold (24 carat)
- Weight: 1 troy ounce (31.103 grams)
- Face Value: $50 USD (legal tender)
- Diameter: 32.7 mm
- Thickness: 2.95 mm
- Mint: United States Mint
The design is based on the famous 1913 “Buffalo Nickel” by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
Obverse (Front):
- Profile of a Native American chief
- Inscription: LIBERTY and year of issue
Reverse (Back):
- American buffalo (inspired by “Black Diamond,” a bison from the Bronx Zoo)
- Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and $50 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD
The Buffalo was introduced specifically for investors who wanted a pure gold U.S. sovereign coin, rather than the alloyed composition of Gold Eagles.
