Crafted from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, this limited-edition coin celebrates one of Australia’s most famous natural gold nuggets, the Little Hero Nugget. The design, originally crafted by Stuart Devlin, first appeared on the 1986 Australian Nugget 1/10oz gold coin. The Little Hero Nugget, discovered in 1890 near Marble Bar, WA, became a local sensation when displayed at Perth’s Union Bank office.
Obverse Design:
The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s “Fifth Portrait”, also known as the “Sixth Portrait” in Australia, designed by Jody Clark. The effigy shows the Queen wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem and Victoria Coronation necklace, extending down to her shoulders. The text encircling the portrait reads: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 1 DOLLAR, denoting the coin’s value.
Reverse Design:
The reverse depicts the Little Hero Nugget, set against a radial background with the nugget’s name and discovery year: LITTLE HERO 1890. Stuart Devlin’s initials “SD” are inscribed on the nugget, and surrounding the coin are the details: AUSTRALIAN NUGGET, the coin’s issue year and content: 2022 1oz 9999 SILVER. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark also appears on the right.
An advanced authentication feature includes a micro-laser engraved letter visible only with magnification, adding to the coin’s security.
