A Remarkable Source of Gold
The Super Pit has its origins in the historic Golden Mile near Kalgoorlie, where gold discoveries during the 1890s established the region as one of the world’s most celebrated goldfields. Once regarded as one of the richest gold-bearing areas on Earth, the Golden Mile was progressively transformed by large-scale open-cut mining throughout the 20th century.
Today, the Super Pit remains a defining feature of Western Australia’s mining landscape. Measuring approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and more than 600 metres deep, this enormous open-cut mine continues to produce significant quantities of gold.
The Super Pit 2022 Gold Bullion Coin commemorates this remarkable mining legacy in a collectible bullion release.
The coin’s reverse features an artistic depiction of a Komatsu excavator operating within the Super Pit open-cut mine, alongside a headframe, or winding tower, representative of the infrastructure used in underground gold mining, including at the nearby Mount Charlotte Underground Mine.
The design is completed by the inscriptions “SUPER PIT AUSTRALIA 2022 1oz 9999 GOLD” and The Perth Mint’s distinctive ‘P’ mintmark.
For added assurance, the reverse incorporates a micro-laser engraved letter as an authentication feature. This detail complements the coin’s distinctive design and reflects The Perth Mint’s attention to security and craftsmanship.
