The 1966 Round Fifty Cent coin is one of the most iconic and sought-after coins in Australian numismatic history. Struck during the introduction of decimal currency, this coin was the first and only Australian 50c piece to be produced in round shape and with 80% silver content.
Soon after its release, the rising silver price rendered the coin’s bullion value higher than its face value, leading to its withdrawal from circulation and eventual replacement in 1969 by the copper-nickel 12-sided version still used today.
Historical value: Australia’s first decimal 50 cent coin
Substantial silver content: Over 10 grams of pure silver per coin
Withdrawn from circulation: Highly collectible due to short mintage run
Features: Arnold Machin’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the Australian Coat of Arms
Note: Stock may include coins purchased from the secondary market in good condition.
