The Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle
First introduced in 2014, the Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle series celebrates one of Australia’s most impressive birds of prey. The original design was created by renowned US coin engraver John M. Mercanti, best known for his work on some of the world’s most recognisable modern coin designs.
With its distinctive wedge-shaped tail and wingspan of up to 2.5 metres, the wedge-tailed eagle is an enduring symbol of Australia’s vast, sun-drenched landscapes. The species is capable of soaring for hours at considerable altitude, making it a fitting subject for one of The Perth Mint’s most popular Australian coin series.
10th Anniversary Design
The reverse features a striking depiction of a wedge-tailed eagle in flight, set against a geometric background inspired by a radiant sunburst.
The design incorporates the inscriptions ‘AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE’ and ‘10TH ANNIVERSARY’, together with the 2024 year-date.
Also featured is the special ‘P125’ mintmark, commemorating the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.
King Charles III Effigy
The obverse features the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, together with the coin’s monetary denomination.
A distinctive wedge-tailed eagle privy mark is also incorporated into the design. The mark depicts the eagle preparing to land on the branch of a dead tree, providing a subtle link to the imagery featured throughout the Wedge-tailed Eagle series.
The coin is supplied in a grey leatherette presentation case and themed shipper, making it well suited to both display and long-term collection.
A numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included, confirming the coin’s limited mintage and specifications.
