Weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (33.93 g), the Krugerrand is crafted from a gold alloy comprising 91.67% purity (22 carats), totalling one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of gold. The remaining 8.33% (2.826 g) consists of copper, enhancing its durability.
Since its inaugural minting in 1967, the Krugerrand has dominated the global coin market, holding a staggering 90% share by 1980 and remaining immensely popular to this day. Designed by Otto Schultz, the obverse features the likeness of Boer statesman Paul Kruger, while the reverse showcases a springbok, a symbol of South Africa. Inscriptions of “South Africa” and the gold content appear in both Afrikaans and English.
