Design
The reverse depicts an adult monkey and a young monkey sitting together in a peach tree. The baby monkey holds a peach, a traditional Chinese symbol associated with longevity and immortality.
The design also features the Chinese character representing “Monkey”, the inscription YEAR OF THE MONKEY and The Perth Mint’s distinctive P mintmark.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, together with the 2016 year-date and the coin’s monetary denomination.
Year of the Monkey
The Monkey is the ninth animal in the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle. Previous and recent Years of the Monkey include 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016.
Those born under the Monkey sign are traditionally associated with characteristics such as intelligence, quick wit, optimism, ambition and adventurousness.
