Description
The 2006 1oz Australian Lunar Series Dog Gold Coin from The Perth Mint.
The ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar, reputed to be the oldest chronological system in history, dates back to before 2,600 BC. This calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, with each year in the 12-year cycle associated with a specific animal. According to legend, the order of the animals in Chinese astrology was determined by their race across a river. The mouse cunningly hitched a ride on the ox’s back, leaping to victory just before reaching the shore. The tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig followed, completing the zodiac.
In Chinese culture, each zodiac animal is believed to influence the personality traits of individuals born under its sign. The Dog, the eleventh sign, symbolizes loyalty and honesty. People born in the Year of the Dog are known for their steadfast loyalty and dependability, as well as their amiable nature.
