Description
The 2005 Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin, also known as “The Australian Nugget,” presents a unique and detailed design celebrating Australia’s iconic kangaroo.
Design Highlights:
- Reverse (Kangaroo Design by Sarah Anderson):
- Features a kangaroo in a crouching stance amid the natural Australian bush, capturing the essence of this cherished animal.
- Inscriptions read: “THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1 OZ .9999 · 2005 ·”, noting the coin’s gold purity, year, and title.
- Obverse (Queen Elizabeth II Portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley):
- Displays the fourth official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile, a design by Ian Rank-Broadley.
- Includes inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS”.
Background:
- Initially, the Perth Mint’s Gold Nugget coins featured famous gold nuggets from Australia until 1990, when the design transitioned to the kangaroo. This update brought a focus to Australia’s most recognizable marsupial, adding even more appeal to the series among collectors and investors. Although commonly referred to as “Nuggets” from their origins, these coins are also affectionately called “Kangaroos” or simply “Roos.”
